Haag-Streit to present Satellite Symposium at ESCRS 2025

We are delighted to invite ESCRS delegates to “The Slit Lamp Exam. Reinvented: Introducing Elara 900: Haag-Streit’s slit lamp for the 21st century.”

Haag-Streit invites ESCRS delegates to join its distinguished faculty for a one-hour satellite symposium on how innovations in slit lamp microscopy can address emerging and future trends in eyecare health.  The symposium will also address the benefits of the new Elara 900, including its superior clinical observation, improved efficiency & optimized ergonomics.

Featuring an engaging and stimulating series of lectures, the panel will share firsthand insights, clinical impressions, and expert evaluations – providing participants with invaluable takeaways to enhance their own clinical practice.

Moderator Prof. Dr. Gerd U. Auffarth will introduce the session, after which our Faculty will present the following:

Enhancing slit lamp efficiency – is it even feasible?

Prof. Dr. Gerd U. Auffarth – University Hospital Heidelberg, Germany

This presentation highlights clinical, ergonomic, and efficiency-related findings from a pilot study evaluating the Elara 900, focusing on examination time, workflow optimization, and user comfort. Based on comparisons with traditional devices, the data demonstrates how Elara 900’s features – including motorized presets, integrated imaging, and ergonomic design – can enhance clinical performance and support future product communication.

As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret time-based data and determine the impact of Elara 900’s motorized presets on clinical throughput
  • Describe how specific design features (e.g., inclined eyepieces) influence examiner comfort during routine use
  • Analyze data on how real-time image capture during exams affects patient engagement and documentation workflows.

Elara 900 vs. BQ 900: Refinement & breakthrough

Dr. Sunil Mamtora – Bristol Eye Hospital, University of Bristol, UK

This presentation summarizes key findings from a pilot evaluation of the Elara 900 slit lamp, comparing its optical quality to the Haag-Streit BQ 900 and examining the clinical benefits of direct EMR connectivity. Data collected from eye care professionals highlights how these features can enhance the diagnostic experience and streamline documentation.

As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Compare the perceived optical quality of the Elara 900 and BQ 900 slit lamps based on structured user feedback, interpreting both qualitative and quantitative data from ophthalmologists and optometrists to assess image clarity and diagnostic experience
  • Evaluate the impact of EMR integration on examination time and documentation efficiency by analyzing timing data and workflow comparisons to understand how the Elara 900’s connectivity influences clinical productivity
  • Assess the practical benefits of integrated digital documentation tools in daily clinical routines by summarizing user-reported advantages and limitations of real-time documentation, and its value in modern ophthalmic practice.

Real case scenario: Evolving my clinical practice with Elara 900

Dr. Maria Kugelberg – Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden

Dr. Kugelberg will share insights from a pilot study evaluating the Elara 900 slit lamp, focused on how integrated imaging and real-time image review impacts patient satisfaction and user confidence. Data collected from both patients and eyecare professionals highlights the clinical value of enhanced documentation features in improving examination quality, communication, and workflow efficiency.

As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the impact of integrated image review on patient satisfaction and perceived safety during slit lamp examinations
  • Assess the clinical value of incorporating slit lamp photography into routine examinations from the user perspective
  • Compare examination workflows with and without documentation features to identify opportunities for improved efficiency in clinical practice.

Watch your posture – it’s important

Dr. Filomena Ribeiro – Hospital da Luz Lisbon, Portugal

Dr. Riberio will share the results of an ergonomic evaluation of the Elara 900, highlighting how its redesigned control layout and inclined eyepieces improve examiner posture and reduce physical strain. Through user feedback, learn how the Elara 900 demonstrates measurable benefits in neck, shoulder, and arm comfort during routine examinations when compared to traditional slit lamps.

As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate the impact of ergonomic design features – such as inclined eyepieces and repositioned control elements – on examiner posture and physical comfort
  • Interpret user-reported feedback on neck, shoulder, and arm strain when comparing the Elara 900 to traditional slit lamps
  • Determine the clinical relevance of ergonomic enhancements in supporting practitioner health and performance.

Imaging that educates – improving patient compliance with Elara 900

Dr. David Goldblum – Pallas Kliniken, Switzerland

In this presentation, Dr. Goldblum will compare patient satisfaction, examination methods, and user confidence with and without the Elara 900’s advanced imaging and preset features. Learn how the collected data shines a light on the capabilities of the next era of slit lamp - and what a "slit lamp of the 21st century" can offer for routine practice.

As a result of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Compare patient-reported outcomes between examinations with and without slit lamp image review
  • Assess the value of in-exam photo documentation
  • Reflect on survey results and develop their own position on the role of image documentation in routine practice.
