Haag-Streit Simulation releases Eyesi Slit Lamp SLT Module

Haag-Streit is pleased to announce the release of the Eyesi Slit Lamp SLT Module: a lifelike virtual reality-based training system for selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT).

From diagnostic to interventional training

With this additional module for the Eyesi Slit Lamp, trainee doctors learn the skills to perform effective SLT laser therapy – a widely used, yet challenging treatment for open-angle glaucoma. Combining the Haag-Streit BQ 900 slit lamp hardware, state-of-the-art VR software, and a laser foot pedal, this release provides teaching institutions with a comprehensive system for both diagnostic eye examinations and laser treatment.

Improve treatment quality

Unlike other laser procedures, where laser "shots" are clearly visible, SLT laser "spots" cannot be seen. This makes it difficult for trainees to maintain correct orientation, track the number and position of laser "shots" placed, as well as determine the quality of the treatment given. To meet these challenges, intuitive guiding elements – combined with interactive animations – teach trainees optimum lens positioning and rotation, helping to ensure a good technique.

Increase confidence & routine

The correct application of SLT therapy requires proper use of laser energy settings and advanced motor skills for precise laser "shots". Moreover, the requirement to learn the complex SLT procedure at once can be overwhelming for trainees. By introducing a new, four-tiered training curriculum, trainees benefit from a simplified framework for systematic SLT learning. The courseware is broken down into training tasks, allowing trainees to confidently master the basics and improve consistently before progressing to therapeutic decision-making and treating virtual patients based on real clinical cases. Online medical courses – intertwined with the simulator curriculum – help students to learn SLT concepts and application, further strenghtening their confidence and clinical understanding.

Reduce risk to patients

Trainees are guided through basic skills and must pass demanding assessments before progressing to more advanced tasks, ensuring that a standard skill level is achieved before lasering their first virtual patient. By providing comprehensive training reports, trainees gain valuable insights into how well they perform laser therapy, while educators can accurately assess skill acquisition. All of this is taught in a safe, virtual reality training environment, allowing trainees to learn and systematically improve their skills without risk to patients.
